One of the best methods to increase metabolism is to build muscle mass. People who need to burn off their excess fat have two choices. They could perform a lot of cardio exercises like jogging each day. Or, they could increase their metabolism.

The most effective way to burn fat is to increase metabolism. A pound of lean muscle mass, even without physical exercises, burns between 35 and 50 calories each day. Most people are not elite athletes who can add about two-thirds of a pound of lean muscle mass in one week. Of course, with steroids, slightly more than a pound of muscle mass can be added.

For the typical one who isn't engaged in an elite training routine and isn't using prohibited drugs, your muscle building results will be less impressive.

Let's simply say that going to the fitness center three days weekly and doing resistance exercises for 20 to 30 minutes daily will add about a quarter of a pound of lean muscle mass to your body every week. Now, not everyone exercises with the same effectiveness or intensity. So, exactly what you do and how hard you work out will make a huge difference. You may very well be able to add muscle mass more rapidly in the beginning.

So, precisely how does this resistance training pay off in fat loss?

After a week of training you will have added a quarter pound of lean muscle mass. You will have increased your metabolism by about 10 calories a day. After 4 weeks of this training, your body is using up at least 40 extra calories each day. Frankly, that does not sound like much, does it?

You really need to know that the result is progressive or cumulative. After three months of resistance training your body is consuming a lot more than 120 extra calories each day. Here is an interesting fact. The typical individual uses about 120 calories to jog a mile. So, you have essentially just added a mile jog each and every day to your fat burning routine. And, that extra 120 calorie expenditure occurs when your muscles are at rest. Whenever you do anything, those new muscles will use even more calories.

Muscles consume both sugars and fats. The percentage of fats they burn varies. Muscles at rest (during sleep, for example) burn a higher proportion of fat (some say around 80%). Working hard, your muscles may use only about 30% fat for energy. So, what does this mean on average about fat burning?

After three months of muscle building resistance workouts, your metabolism will have increased. The increase thanks to new muscle mass will be burning off at least two-thirds of a pound of fat every single month. And, the more exercise you get just moving around, the more fat the new muscles will consume. Because you are up and around and in a position to go to the gym, you're going to burn off more fat than that.

You have boosted your metabolism. Your body is currently burning much more fat than it did. And, you are automatically losing that surplus fat without the need for jogging or persistent calisthenic classes.
